A complicated love story…
Sparrow, which follows the love story between a hot, cold mob boss that gets what he wants, when he wants it and a spunky heroine that is nothing like what Troy was used to, was a story that I was both in love with and wished I didn’t love. It was complicated.
Let me explain. L.J. Shen does a great job of writing the dialogues, and most of the scenes between Troy and Sparrow were either a little too hot for me to read in the room with anyone nearby, or a little too cold that I was desperate to wrap myself in blankets and cry for warmth.
Troy is a hero that I wanted to love. He’s damn sexy. I mean, a man with conceit that matches his ungodly good looks and striking eyes is something that I literally salivated for upon reading. However, he’s a cold-hearted bastard that lies, cheats, and takes where he needs to—I mean, the guy is called “The Fixer” for a reason. So when it came to the love part of the story, which I have third-degree burns from, it was mostly sexual and raw, but there was something wanting from it. I needed more from him, and I wasn’t getting it.
Sparrow is a loveable character, which is the very reason I immediately related to her. I loved that she wasn’t the bombshell beauty and instead harbored some of the same normal characteristics of the average woman. Her POV was slathered in sass and immersed heavily in sarcasm. I loved her so much. So when she first deals with Troy, a man she loves to hate and can’t help but lust for, it was supposed to be epic. And, for the most part, it was. But as I’ve said before, it felt lacking. I was almost encouraging her to run away at top speed and never look back.
However, I will say that the only thing I lacked for in this was a hero I could count on. Otherwise, the plot was well-developed, the sex scenes combustible, and the suspense palpable. And for this reason, I rated the book the way I did and would recommend it to those women that don’t mind a man that is nearly ice-cold, black-hearted, cheats, lies, and never says sorry. The plot and heroine are worth the read.
