He’s a nøkk who could almost pass for human, except his webbed fingers and entirely black eyes give him away. In my attempt to befriend him, I give him three drops of my blood, a black animal, and a bottle of vodka (I hear it’s a nøkk thing). Which apparently triggers some ancient bonding ritual. My bad.

I must admit I’m into him. Maybe those online tests that say I’m only mostly straight are right. But there are a few I can’t know his real name. He won’t show me his true form. And he’s both an omen and a cause of drowning … which is troubling, since he’s on the water polo team with me.

Still, something about him calls to me, even if it shouldn’t.

The Nøkk and the Jock is a monster-human bi-awakening M/M romance starring Brandon Fernandez, a golden retriever of a human being, and the prickly, melancholy nøkk. It features puzzling emoji text conversations, a monster who can stop waterfalls in midair, and drunken scareoke (monster karaoke). HEA guaranteed.

My first monster romance.

I have to be honest; this book was a bit different from anything I’ve ever read so I wasn’t exactly sure how to rate it. I didn’t love it as much as I’ve loved other books by this author but I did like it a lot and I enjoyed reading it, so I decided to go with 4-stars. The writing was good but all of the pun-y things (e.g. Scareoke and Mummy Mocha) got to be a bit much for me. I’m sure that they were intended to be fun, and they were at first. It’s possible that my head just wasn’t in the right place for this book when I read it but I did enjoy it.

What I did love about this story was how much Brandon encouraged Steve (The Nøkk) to be himself and how much he cared for him right from the beginning – before any romance started between them. I also loved how Steve defended Brandon when some bullies attacked them. Steve’s dad was kind of a not-so-nice guy when he appeared a few times but that eventually changed. I felt compassion for Steve and how he felt insecure about showing his true self; this was mostly due to how he was treated by his human mother.

There are many different monsters as supporting characters in this story and that made for a fun read. Brandon’s best friend, a vampire named Clay, was very supportive of Brandon when he began questioning his sexuality.

All in all, this was a pretty fun story and I think it’s great that Leslie McAdam is trying something new. I plan to keep reading all of the MM books that she writes.
