Immortal, seductive, able to shift into a wolf, and a downright sinful highland warrior, Kennard O’Caha has had only one mission for the past several centuries—find and destroy the dark sorcerer Athol. Now that the job is done, it’s time to park his motorcycle, kick up his boots, enjoy a few drinks, and possibly find a honey to warm his bed for a night. After all, nothing quite refuels the magik like pleasure.
That was the plan, anyways.
Too bad life had something else in store for this magikal biker bad boy. When a stubborn redhead is set in his path, it’s all he can to do to keep from instantly claiming her—his mate. Evil has its sights set on his woman and he’s not about to let her go without one hell of a fight.
A Druid of Her Own is the first in the Druid series that I’ve read. I’m definitely interested in picking up the others in the series. I’ve found I totally enjoy reading Ms. Roth’s books. This particular romance is a blend of fantasy and paranormal with its magic and wolf shifters. Anyone that has read their share of novellas and novels of varying lengths has probably noticed that the shorter the piece the more concise and tight the writer has to be with the storyline. This takes a lot of skill. Ms. Roth has the skill. But sometimes in being so concise and tightening things down so much to fit a smaller footprint there are some aspects of a story that aren’t as detailed as you might hope for as a reader. In this particular instance, it was the amount of actual romance you get to see happening. I truly don’t think that Ms. Roth could have told the story differently, though. Thank heavens that it’s an accepted fact that wolf shifters know their mates almost instantly and not much wooing is needed.
So, you might ask if there wasn’t a whole lot of wooing going on, what was going on? The beginning of the story is all about getting to know Kennard O’Caha, his cousins and the very real threat they have in the mage Athol. At one time Athol had been a Druid… until he decided to walk the dark paths. Thinking they have finally vanquished their enemy they go off to celebrate. But a random hookup is the furthest from Kennard’s mind when he and his cousins ride into town. Nope nothing random will do when he sees the curly redhead. Distraction becomes the name of the game when the single-minded focus of his wolf leads him right to the door of her coffee shop. The chemistry is immediate. Sparks fly and lips lock. You get a real good sense of Kennard’s sense of humor and drop dead sexiness after all the seriousness of battle when he encounters Maggie. This is one bad boy alpha that is close to losing his control when presented with his mate, something just not done in the company of humans. Something that has our hero doing a kiss and run.
So, what is our heroine, Maggie supposed to think? She has her hands full with managing her coffee shop, battling rogues and chasing demons, let alone a town full of people that call her Crazy Maggie. Nightmares have plagued her life. Power emanates from her core. Her best friend is a witch. Men who pay her a mind are what I wouldn’t hesitate to call real douchebags. So, now she has Mr. Hotness playing hit and run on her… definitely time for a girls night.
It takes skill for an author to be able to take a few short scenes and give you such a fully developed sense of who and what her characters are about. Although you don’t get a whole lot of wooing, what you get is distilled and powerful. If you haven’t guessed, Athol is so not out of the picture. Expect a few twists. As I said, I totally enjoy Ms. Roth’s stories. If you are looking for a great blend of fantasy, paranormal and romance then the Druid series will definitely fill the bill.
