Having not read any of the King of Prey series before, Prince of Flight was a good introduction and left me wanting to know more about the others. I anticipate I’ll be doing a bit of catch-up reading soon. I can’t claim to have read a lot of Mandy Roth’s numerous books. I mean come on have you noticed how prolific this woman is? Considering I only picked up my first book by her in the recent past, I’ve put a fair few behind me in that time. The one thing I have noticed is that Mandy never fails to entertain me. There hasn’t been a one that I haven’t loved reading.
So you might ask why I’ve given this one a 4-star rating, rather than a 5. I think when it comes down to it, it’s all because of the length. Inherent in reading a shorter title an author has to be tighter in their storyline. Mandy does this very well. But, in the end I was left wanting more… more build up on Keonae and Lark’s relationship, more loving, more sex… well just more. You see I loved Keonae and Lark. I was rather taken with the secondary characters as well. I’m really looking forward to going back and reading their stories. In case any of you should think I’m implying the story wasn’t complete, stop right there. Prince of Flight is a complete story. It gave me a good sense of just who Keonae and Lark were, where their relationship had been and where it was going. I’m just a greedy person (ahem, yeah that’s the word I was going to use.) When I fall in love with characters I want to see more of them.
Keonae is a prince of the bird realm. Self-exiling himself, a scarred and now imperfect Keonae wanders the human realm, never settling in one place for all too long. It’s a bit hard to settle in a community when you don’t age at the same rate as the humans around you. Of course, there is also the pesky issue of the vultures. The same vultures that left Keon torn and bleeding years ago. Now he conceals his scars and hides behind a gruff manner, that is with everyone but Lark. He lives his days in anticipation of his late night breakfasts with the barmaid. He knows he should move on and that this hole in the wall bar definitely has no real draw… that is except for Lark. When it comes to Lark, Keon has discovered he just can’t walk away. Could his insidious need for her company actually be a true mating?
Lark has secrets. She’s on the run from a bunch of birdmen. Life on the road is spent one step ahead with danger lurking around every corner. So what is she doing staying in a dive like this for so long? Life has been traumatic and violent for Lark. It’s a constant struggle to survive. She’s a tough cookie with a great sense of humor and a loving nature despite what life has dished out. Each day she tells herself it’s time to move on, and each night she basks in Keon’s company. Now her enemies are on her doorstep and life has a few surprises in store for her.
I totally loved these two and the way they play off of each other. They have a way of bringing out the best in each other and when the going gets rough, these two totally kick butt. Prince of Flight is a great read and more than makes picking up Taming the Monsters worth it… even if it’s only .99. I guess that makes it a total steal. So if you like kick butt characters, action, suspense, a bit of humor and the paranormal I’d pick up a copy.
