Synopsis

As The Heartbreak Kid, Mitch Jenner is known as the biggest womanizer of all the rodeo cowboys—but it’s just an act to keep himself safe. In fact, Mitch is so afraid of coming out that he’s opted to stay single—and a virgin. He’s fine with being alone…until he meets the mysterious Paulo.

Paulo Bernardes is here to learn the American style of bull riding well enough to teach it back home in Brazil. A namorado—a boyfriend—will distract him from his goal, but he’s captivated by Mitch, who understands him even when they don’t speak the same language. In return, Paulo wants Mitch to accept himself—and their relationship.

In private, Mitch yields to his attraction to Paulo and is rewarded with a heat and tenderness he comes to crave. But he still fears exposing their relationship. And as they grow closer, Paulo wonders how he’ll live without Mitch once their time together is up—how he’ll pick up the pieces of his heart when it’s time to say goodbye.

Whoa – hot sex scenes!

This story has an interesting premise – there is a language barrier between the two main characters; Paulo doesn’t really speak much English.Mitch, aka The Heartbreak Kid, is deep in the closet. As a bull-rider he’s not afraid of much but the thought of being “out” scares him to death. He still remembers stories of someone who came out and was brutally killed because of it. So, as the Heartbreak Kid, he flirts and dances with women but goes no further.

Paulo is from Portugal and has come to the U.S. to learn the American style of bull riding. He wants to open a school in his home country that teaches both styles. Where he’s from it’s OK to be open about who you are and he has a difficult time understanding why Mitch must hide who he is.

While Mitch and Paulo don’t speak the same language they manage to understand each other just fine. Mitch begins teaching Paulo English and Paulo teaches Mitch Portuguese.

There is a lot of heat between the two characters but they manage to hide their relationship from their fellow rodeo riders. The sex scenes are hot and explicit.

I enjoyed reading this story – my first from this author – but I’m having a hard time putting my finger on why I didn’t like it better. The ending was a bit abrupt for me and the epilogue was much appreciated. However, there was a 4 year jump and I thought that was a bit too much. It would have been better for me if the gap wasn’t so great. I can’t really explain more without giving away too much of the story.

It took a caffeine-fueled car trip with my 92-year-old grandmother and two-year-old son in July of 2007 to awaken my Muse. That story would become my first book as I figured out how, exactly, one writes a novel.

Let’s just say the learning curve was steep.

One character led to another. Before long, my characters were in South Dakota, among the Lakota Sioux tribe. Modern-day cowboys who are the Indians – without planning it, I find myself writing about the people and places that held my imagination throughout my childhood.

In 2010, I sold the award-winning Indian Princess to Stacy Boyd of Harlequin Desire. The book was released A Man of His Word in 2011. Since then, I’ve sold many more books to Harlequin Desire and Samhain! Click here for a printable book list.

A Man of Privilege won the RT Reviewers Choice Best Desire of 2012! I was honored to attend the RT Convention in Kansas City to receive my award in person.

I live in Illinois with my husband, son, and rescue mutts. I am a writer and editor at Mark Twain Media, Inc., an educational publishing company. I am a member of Romance Writers of America and the Chicago-North RWA. When not chasing my son around or tweaking my books, I attempt to read, knit, and complete a home improvement project in my historical 1895 Queen Anne house.
