Sage Can Be My Cowboy Any Day!
The last thing I expected from Fifi Flowers was a cowboy romance! She writes about Paris, artists, hot yoga gurus, and life in big cities starring busy, professional people! And even though Drawn to a Cowboy seems like a departure of sorts from her usual, it is an absolute success. I’d also swear Ms. Flowers has spent some quality time at a dude ranch. Riding the range with hot cowboys. Doing…uh, research. As with all of her novels, this one is full of humor, smart and witty dialogue, and sizzling sex. And, as with all of her novels, it also has poignant moments. She pulls you along on a fun, easy ride, then takes the story deeper by suddenly introducing a surprise (that you kind of sort of knew was on the horizon). It also shows that Fifi Flowers is a damn good writer.
Jade isn’t really as nutty as her crayon red hair would make her appear. She is, however, fluent in French curse words and a bit of drama. Which are the circumstances under which she meets hunky cowboy Sage. Ms. Flowers reeled me in with the funny gas station meet-cute opening scene. Even though we’re introduced to Jade during her silly tirade, it’s clear she’s not a flighty dork. She’s mature, professional, and talented. She’s also a quirky artist in need of a job, taking a chance that could be a VERY bad decision. I loved her inner dialogues, her humor, her passion for art and nature, and her willingness to try anything new. When she and Sage get together she has the feeling real fast that this is more than a fling. But I liked that they made the effort to get to know each other; camping, trail riding, river rafting, working together on the ranch. The sex is written in a more subdued manner than some of Ms. Flowers’s other books but it fits well with the story. I wasn’t disappointed.
Sage has a lot going on, especially with a possible legal battle over his right to have inherited the Bleu Moon Ranch. When he meets Jade and learns of her predicament, he doesn’t hesitate to offer her a job. Which is not his normal behavior. It might be a big mistake but for some absurd reason, he can’t let go of this gorgeous woman with the crazy red hair. Like just about all of this author’s heroes, I loved Sage. Her heroes are sexy and fun, they rarely move into the douche zone, and they always respect their women. Sage is living the life he’s wanted to live since he was a boy. Having inherited the ranch from the man he considered more of a father to him than his own, Sage is respectful of the honor. He grew up spending summers on Hank’s ranch, his goal to one day be a cowboy. Owning and operating the Bleu Moon is not a job. It’s his life. And I loved that he would wonder what Hank’s feelings might be about certain things; the ranch, the legal battle, and Jade. Sage is an intense guy, in and out of the sack.
Ms. Flowers always gives us more than a fun, sexy read. She dissects relationships right before our eyes and astutely sets about explaining, through her characters, the nature of friendship and love. Drawn to a Cowboy will have you putting together clues, saying “I knew it!”, and enjoying every page. I’m anxious to see what she has in store for Sage’s brother, the restaurateur!
