She opened her eyes, and gasped at the sight before her.
The old, unused, empty pool that moments ago had been dark, lit only by her slight flashlight, was now lit by what must have been a hundred candles. The smell of beeswax hung in the air.
The pool was filled with inviting water, not dust. The grayed tiles now glimmered in the candlelight, the brilliant white rectangles a stark contrast to the cool blue of the pool water.
“Oh…” Her heart hammered in her chest and she stumbled backward, fighting to keep her balance. This wasn’t possible. She blinked several times but the room didn’t change.
The room, the water, everything was so still she heard her own heart pounding within her chest.
The single word she’d let out in shock no longer echoed off the walls.
“Would you care for a swim, mon coeur?”
Meg started and let out another gasp.
That voice…Quint?
She turned to find him slowly approaching. She thought her heart would beat out of her chest. She stared at him, unable to even speak, unable to breathe.
His sparkling blue eyes reflected the light from the many candles.
Her hand flew to her chest as she worked to catch her breath while starring at the man who’d almost given her a heart attack.
“Quint? How—what?” There were so many questions to ask, but she couldn’t form a complete sentence.
“I didn’t mean to scare you.” His voice was soft and seductive. He looked like her husband. He sounded like her husband.
And yet, he wasn’t. Was he? She didn’t think so.
“Please accept my apology. The last thing I want to do is frighten you, dear wife.”
Unable to move, she watched him approach, coherent thoughts refusing to come to her. He sounded so formal. “Quint?”
“Do you like it?”
“Like it?” What was he asking?
“The pool.”
She tore her gaze from his and glanced at the pool. The water in the pool was the same color as his eyes. Then she looked up at the ceiling. The plaster ceiling that before seemed out of place was gone. Now a domed glass ceiling invited in the grayness and flashing lightning from the outside storm. Rain poured against the glass, its sound softer than she expected.
She dragged in a breath. “It’s beautiful.” She said, her voice ragged and almost not hers. “It’s wonderful. It’s what I imagined it to be.” She was light-headed and still had trouble breathing. “This has to be a dream. I must have sat down somewhere and fallen asleep. There’s no other explanation.” She still felt her heart racing, still heard her blood rushing in her ears.
“No, Meggie.” He reached out and took her hand. “It’s no dream. I’m here, you’re here. And we are real. I assure you.”
He kissed her mouth passionately, drawing another groan from deep within her. When his soul-reaching kiss ended, Meg again opened her eyes…and found herself in the water.
