It was OK.
This review is a hard one for me to write. A lot of people consider 3-star reviews good but I know that most authors don’t; I don’t write many 3-star reviews.
Out of the Ocean is the first book I’ve read by Lynn Michaels and it was OK but it didn’t work well for me. The story line was good and the interaction between the characters was OK. It was the writing the bothered me a bit or perhaps it was the editing? The words just didn’t flow for me; it seemed choppy.
Scott’s father also puzzled me. One minute he’s adamantly against Scott’s relationship with Cal and then rather quickly (or so it seemed to me) he’s helping them. I also found it strange when Scott’s parents called him Scotty. That seemed way out of character considering his given name is Prescott and that’s what they usually called him.
Given my comments above you might wonder why I’ve given this book even 3-stars? Keep reading for my positive comments.
I do have some positive things to say. I liked both of the MCs (main characters) and I thought that the storm, and all of the other things they went through, seemed very believable. It seemed to me that Ms. Michaels did a lot of research to get this part of the story right. I also love epilogues and this story had a good one. I liked seeing how Scott and Cal fared after recovering from their time on the ocean in a life boat.
I’m not sorry I read this book and I don’t consider that I wasted my time; it’s a relatively short novella. I’d be willing to read more by this author. Reviews of her work seem to indicate that Out of the Ocean isn’t typical of her writing so perhaps things just didn’t go as well for her with this story.

O Factor: Scorcher
“Well, we do have some food here,” Scott said, as Cal sorted the nets.“Yep.”
“I have some crackers and a can of smoked oysters. Want that for breakfast?”
“Nope.”
“Aren’t you hungry, Cal?”
Cal grunted. “You need to ration that food. Who knows how long we’ll be out here.” There was no way Cal was going to take food from Scott. He couldn’t.
“Uh…you mean we.”
“Huh? No.”
“Don’t grunt at me. This is serious. You’re sharing this food with me. Now what do you want to eat?”
Cal ignored him. Scott meant well, but his own instincts wouldn’t let him compromise. No matter what happened, Cal had to do everything he could to protect Scott, make sure he survived. Nothing else mattered. “Have some crackers, Scott. I’m busy.”
