I had to be a bit patient with this one but I ended up enjoying it a lot.
I’m fairly new to R. J. Scott’s books and I’ve loved the Bodyguards, Inc. series. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book. It’s longer than the novella length Bodyguards, Inc. stories. Sometimes I really love novella length books by an author but then don’t enjoy longer ones as much. I’m a bit in the middle with this one. It started out slow for me and I had a bit of trouble following the story at first; the writing didn’t seem to flow as well as other books I’ve read by R. J. Scott. I am really glad that I stuck with it, though; as the story got much better for me the farther I got into the book. The blurb for the book is spot on so I won’t rehash it. City boy, Jay, doesn’t quite know what to make of his new boss, Nate. They don’t exactly hit it off too good in the beginning. Jay’s gaydar isn’t great and he keeps getting vibes from Nate that he can’t interpret because he’s sure that Nate is straight.
Nate knows it’s a bad idea to get involved with a city boy, especially since that city boy works for him. Unfortunately he just can’t seem to help himself.
This book is so much more than an M/M romance. It’s a story about family and love and complications within families. Crooked Tree Ranch sets up a lot of characters that I’m sure will be featured in forthcoming books.
There isn’t really a cliffhanger as the main story between Jay and Nate is resolved but not all questions are answered in this book. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series, The Rancher’s Son. Look for my review of it soon on Xtreme-Delusions.
