Explosive, gritty and cathartic.

The Beyond series has been quite a ride. Knowing that Beyond Surrender is the end of the journey with Sector Four’s O’Kanes leaves me with a bit of sadness. Thankfully, the authors have decided to spin-off into another of Eden’s sectors. So, when I began reading Beyond Surrender it was with anxiety and anticipation for what would resolve the sectors war with Eden. No war is without loss and heartache. Beyond Surrender gives you both. At the same time, it builds on the stories of the couples established previously in the series while giving the O’Kane princess her romance. Who better to pair the princess with than the prince of another sector?

Nessa grew up at Declan “Dallas” O’Kane’s knee as his honorary little sister. When Dallas moved on from his family homestead in Texas to the sectors of Eden, he extended an invitation to Nessa and her grandfather. With Nessa and her grandfather came their brewing skills when it came to all things liquor and that liquor became the bankroll for sector four and the backbone of their way of life. Being the one person with her finger on the pulse of the O’Kanes’ lifeblood meant a life of immense pressure and the protection of every member of the O’Kane crew. To say that Nessa didn’t exactly have the opportunity to find Mr. Right, let alone enjoy Mr. Right now would be putting things mildly. For once she would sure like to know what it was that all the rest of the women found so darned special in their hook ups because she sure wasn’t finding it… then along came Ryder and everything in Nessa’s world changed.

Ryder’s father died a cop in Eden. When his mother passed on he became the de facto heir to Sector Eight’s leader Jim Jernigan. But if being Jim’s heir weren’t convoluted enough, Ryder became an enforcer and eventually the leader of Sector Five. Besides Sector Four, Sector Five is perhaps the most influential of the sectors for its technology and medical supply factories. Learning from the best, Ryder follows Jim’s tenets of keeping his fingers on the pulse of the revolution. Ryder was always meant to be the leader of the revolution… well, that was the plan anyways. But Ryder is more than happy to take his place alongside Dallas O’Kane. The one thing Ryder never expected… Nessa. She gives him reason to think beyond the war. Reason to dream.

Life in the sectors is gritty. Everything has an expiration date and so life is lived in the moment. Beyond Surrender takes all that grit and determination to live free of the tyranny of Eden and builds it into an explosive conclusion that will have you dancing on the edge of your seat. For those of you new to the O’Kanes I would highly recommend you start at the beginning as this is one series that builds on what has come before. By far this is one of my absolute favorite series so I’m sad to see it end. On the other hand, I’m so glad to know that not everything ends here. I’m certainly looking forward to the spin-off series, Gideon’s Riders.
