Synopsis

War makes strange bedfellows.

I, Gaius Domitus, one-eyed rebel dragon king of the Provinces, know that better than most, since I have to fight off half my ungrateful family on a regular basis to keep law and order here in my lands. But I never expected to have to consort with a barbarian human woman.

Kachka is beautiful if you like them fierce—and of course, I do. But she keeps complaining about how spoiled and decadent I am, and how a feared Daughter of the Steppes has no time for foolish dragons. I think she likes my eye patch, though. It is quite dashing. With death always at our tails, we take our passion like we take our allies. As they say, love the barbarian you’re with…

War, mayhem, and laughter. What more can you ask for?

One of the things I always love about this series is that the characters are larger than life. Certain personality traits are overly pronounced in Ms. Aiken’s characters. These traits can be so very ridiculous that it makes the characters totally lovable in spite of their flaws. While the series overall is full of brutal wars, mad queens, rebel kings, zealots and self-important dragons that fight at the drop of a feather, the very over exaggerated personalities lend so much levity to the story that you can’t help but turn the page to see what outrageous thing will happen next.

In the case of Feel the Burn you get a heroine from a culture where the women are warriors who live to die with honor. They live for centuries and they collect multiple husbands. While the men in their culture aren’t slaves, they are held in total disdain, unworthy of any consideration as having an equivalent intelligence. When Kachka and her team of tribeswomen are sent on a mission to stop the cult attacks on rival temples they stumble upon the rebel king, Gaius being held captive by slavers and a priestess of the cult. The ruthlessly blunt Kachka finds herself questioning her position on the male gender when it comes to male dragons. Could it be that they might be the exception to the rule? Could Gaius be worthy of more than her usual love em and leave em routine?

Gaius Lucius Domitus, Iron dragon, and the one-eyed Rebel King from the West was set on a path of vengeance. Then he found himself enraptured by his savior, Kachka, Daughter of the Steppes warrior. It takes every bit of finesse and every ounce of manipulation he’s learned in his many years as the Rebel King to be the self-assured, confident and perhaps arrogant dragon that he is and yet play upon one human woman’s lowly opinion of the male gender and not lose face. And in the end is it not worth a bit of face to be with the one who thrills and challenges you to no end?

Battles have been won but the war is far from over. I can’t wait for the next installment of the Dragon Kin series. What new characteristics will Ms. Aiken play upon? The possibilities are endless. If you love dragon shifters half as much as I do, I know you’ll love this series. Prepare for plenty of LOL moments because Feel the Burn delivers.
