Series: Rise of the Iliri, Book 2
Released May 9, 2016
The Black Blades are the best special operations unit in the Conglomerate of Free Citizens, but none of them are free. They’re iliri, a race of humanoids specifically designed to be the perfect soldiers. No one can remember where they came from, but the histories say they were made to kill – and it’s what they do best.
Halfway across the continent, the Emperor of Terric wants to exterminate their entire species. At least that’s the excuse he’s using to conquer every country between Terric and the Conglomerate, and he’s handing out iliri heads as trophies to prove he’s serious.
But now, their secret is out. The world knows the Black Blades aren’t human. They’re so good because of their alien ancestry, because of what humans made them to be! The only problem? It’s starting to look like their own side agrees with the enemy. To keep their unit from being disbanded and sent back into slavery, they have to stop the Emperor’s bribe. Eight of them aren’t enough. Their only hope is to rely upon the humans they’ve learned not to trust, but things are never black and white.

Highly anticipated. Supremely satisfied.
After having read BloodLust I was rather impatient for the next in the series, so you can imagine my excitement when I was offered Instinctual to review. Let me tell you, I am totally loving this Syfy/Fantasy series Ms. Hadley has created. While the Rise of the Iliri series is not a romance, it has just enough romantic elements to appease that need in me.
In BloodLust, Sal was introduced to her Iliri roots. While she is a purebred Iliri she had been raised as a slave pet to humans and really had no clue about her very heritage and the instincts of the Iliri. Instinctual is Sal’s journey to discovering what comes most natural to a Kaisae. While Kaisae is the term used for the matriarch of an Iliri family pack unit, a true Kaisae hasn’t been seen in an eon. Sal promises to be the first and she is absolutely clueless to just what her role as a true Kaisae means. Clueless or not, her pack has every intention of seeing she is guided by her true heritage.
By the end of BloodLust, Blaec had outed the Black Blades as being made up of Iliri to their human counterparts. While they have allies in some of the military, and Blaec has garnered respect and enough chits to gain the cooperation of other elite military teams, they have their definite enemies within the government. Enemies which plan to see them humiliated and disbanded if not slaughtered outright. It will take every bit of cunning and skill to outwit and outplay their own government. Even amongst their allies they have their share of spies and traitors.
The Black Blades are made of eight individuals with remarkable skills…
We have a collection of skills,” Blaec said. “Sal changes her features and color, Cyno reads memories through touch, Arctic lets us speak in our heads, Shift and Risk heal, Razor can track anything, and I get premonitions of the future.”
Now their greatest ally in the military, General Ran Sturmgren has told them they need to increase their numbers by two as he has an extended mission for Sal and Cyno that will put them down in numbers for at least a year of deployment when they have completed their latest challenge. So while trying to maneuver the political landmines that would see them destroyed they need to go through the trials to select new members while attempting to foil the Emperor from delivering steel as bribes to potential allies that would see the downfall of the Conglomerate of Free Citizens.
On the love front, Sal must adjust to the reality of leaving Blaec behind and her very real relationship with Cyno and just what it means. He is her anchor in navigating the quagmires of the BloodLust and the sexual needs it induces. But is he more than just an outlet? Coming to terms with the very real differences between Iliri and humans when it comes to sex, love and relationships is in itself a challenge.
Once again Ms. Hadley has written a book I could not put down. I was drawn in and enraptured by the world and characters she has created. Having read a blog post by Ms. Hadley that stated that her first draft of this series was actually written in 2013 and how very appalled she was with the first draft upon rereading it, I am so amazed at the process that delivers such an engaging story. I can’t wait for the next installment which I believe is currently in edits. Here’s hoping edits don’t take too long because I sure want to know what happens next for Sal and the Iliri.

From love to loss, hopes and dreams, there’s always an escape waiting inside the pages of her books. WHEN WE WERE KINGS
Tossed into the gladiator arena, everyone expected the delicate girl in the fancy pink dress to be the first to die. Leyli had other plans. Surviving was at the top of her list. Revenge was a close second.
Having grown up behind the sheltered walls of the Oberhame Palace, she knew what the crowd wanted. Norihame had built their culture from the scraps of their neighbors. Gladiators were just one part. Evidently, political coups were another, and she’d just become a pawn in the games of men. But why was she still alive? They’d killed her brother, the heir to the throne. Had they gotten to her father? Was the king dead?
In the cell beside her, the Lion of Lenlochlien was impressed. The first day, they all cried. Men, women, it didn’t matter. But this one was different. Her tears didn’t slow her down, they just made her stronger, and when he looked in her eyes, he saw it. Her desperation was feral. It meant she wouldn’t hesitate to do what she had to. She might be cornered, but that bitch was the kind that would bite.
When he offered advice, she took it. When he told her how to be better, she tried. When she kept coming back after each round, he dared to hope that she’d survive. He had no idea that he was about to become her best weapon. Leyli didn’t just want to live through the games, she wanted to protect her father’s throne, but to do that, she had to become someone else. She couldn’t be the Princess of Norihame. The Lion had to make her a Wolf.
Chained side by side, he’ll show her how to be a killer. She’ll give him a reason to keep fighting. Together, they’ll learn that it takes a friend to survive.
**When We Were Kings is a complete novel without a cliffhanger ending.**

WHEN WE WERE DANCING
They called her the Gladiator Queen, the first female heir to the throne of Norihame. Leyli never wanted this, but her cousin’s scheming left no other option. He’d killed her brother, trying to claim the throne for himself, and sold her off to be a gladiator, hoping to get rid of her. It didn’t work. Now, she’ll do whatever it takes to make sure Palino can’t destroy the country her family fought so hard to keep safe.
On the sands of the arena, death was honest. Men fought for their lives and nothing else. In the palace, everything is different. The threats are veiled in fancy clothes and whispered rumors. Spies lay in wait around every corner, bribed with promises of power and wealth. Once, she thought this was normal. But no longer can she care about petty scandals, not when her citizens – her friends – are dying because of laws her family made.
To win this game, she has to keep her cousin far from succession. The best way is an heir of her own. She needs a noble husband who won’t kill her in her sleep and — hopefully — one who will ignore the hulking shadow of her best friend turned bodyguard. She never expected Tristan to become a weapon that could be used against her. How much of her own happiness will she give up for Norihame?
The game is King of the Hill. The music for their dance is made of politics. Fate gave her a chance to change everything, but he’s a fickle god. Leyli has to get this right. She may not be on the sands of the arena, but she’s still fighting, and the Wolf of Oberhame will not be defeated.
