Know thine enemies, their strengths, and their numbers. Count your allies. Keep them close, but not too close. These are the thoughts I had when I finally went to bed after finishing Metamorphosis. Ms. West, once again, has written a very engaging tale. A continuation of Izzy and Lucas’s journey, Metamorphosis takes you along for a wild ride through three realms, an earth populated with hidden angels, demons, vampires and other paranormal creatures… a dash through hell… a whimsical but potentially dangerous walk through a realm reminiscent of Oz.

Izzy continues to hone her skills as a guardian, but a not so joyous meeting with her mother in law leaves her with irreparable changes. Changes that will continue to morph her throughout the book. While pure of heart, the darkness of her demon blood begins to awaken and it will take everything Izzy can manage to learn to control and balance her powers. If this were not challenging enough, she has to deal with the ever-present pursuit of Pavel and Bernie. The one simply a bother, the former purely an annoyance that never seems to let up. Let’s just say there were times I wanted to reach inside the book and thump Pavel a good one. Compile this with Izzy’s totally impure thoughts of angel hotness and the tale is given just the right touch of levity.

Lucas is faced with the challenge of his life coming up against the vampire mother that is second to Lucifer in her evil intents and protecting the love of his life. After his mother’s betrayal that took the life of his father, he is ever leery of the dark blood Izzy holds. It’s his very fear and doubts that will stir an unsettling awakening within Izzy. What is this stoic leader to do when his very best friend continues to challenge his claim on his mate? At every turn, he is forced to deal with men in pursuit of what he considers his. It becomes quite the challenge to keep his mate safe and protect her when Izzy at times appears to be his worse enemy in the endeavor.

Metamorphosis introduces us to Simon, the head of the council of angels and Izzy’s new taskmaster of a mentor. We meet Annie, a sprite from another realm and the newest guardian on their team. Old enemies are revisited. New ones are encountered. New realms are visited. New allies are made. Battles are fought. The action and adventure mounts. All in all a very satisfying read. If I were to complain, it would have been that moment at the end when I realized there was no end. Naughty Brianna leaves us on the edge of a cliff waiting for a resolution but craving more of the adventure. So, while I seldom care for cliffhangers, I have to admit this one serves its purpose. I will definitely be picking up the final book in this series. I want to know where this romance and saga takes us. With this second book in the Promiscus Guardian series, Ms. West shows that her debut Awakenings was indeed no fluke. I see a trail of five stars on the horizon for this new author.
